DENVER (AP) - A former police officer is joining the effort to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Colorado.
Retired Denver officer Tony Ryan is scheduled to help gather signatures Wednesday to petition the question onto state ballots next year. If approved, the measure would make marijuana legal in small amounts for adults over 21.
Ryan is now with the group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. He'll be joined by Leonard Frieling, a lawyer who specializes in marijuana law and a former municipal judge in Lafayette.
Supporters need to gather about 86,000 signatures to put the question to voters.
