Forecast falls for Colorado winter wheat harvest

DENVER (AP) - Agriculture officials are trimming the forecast for this year's Colorado winter wheat harvest.

A forecast released Thursday estimates Colorado winter wheat production will be 49.5 million bushels this year. That's 18 percent lower than the June 1 forecast, and it's 33 percent below last year's harvest.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says Colorado growers planted 2.2 million acres but expect to harvest only 1.5 million acres, mostly due to extreme drought in southeast Colorado. The agency says that if the forecast holds true, it would be the smallest harvested area for winter wheat in Colorado since 1965.
