More than 36 million Americans are now using food stamps, according to the New York Times. The numbers are climbing higher across the country, including in Southern Colorado.
In El Paso County 8% of the public is on food stamps, which has soared 38% from 2007.
In Pueblo County 17% of people use food stamps, which is 14% higher than two years ago.
Additionally it's estimated the federal program helps feed one in eight Americans and one in four children.
In Pueblo County one in three children rely on food stamps; in El Paso County the program helps feed 15% of children.
