Every year 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from eating tainted food, according to the CDC. Recent attention has been focused on a listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe. Health experts say it's important for people to remember to wash all their produce before eating it.
You don't eat the rind of a cantaloupe, but that's where the bacteria can grow. The Pueblo City-County Health Department says you have to wash it to avoid contaminating the fruit inside.
Health experts also say make sure you wash your hands before handling produce, use a clean knife and cutting board and don't eat produce that has been punctured and could contain bacteria.
