A man from Florida may face charges for a crash near Calhan Sunday morning that seriously injured him and his family and slightly injured a Canon City man.
Colorado State Patrol says Alexis Vargas, 22, from Orlando, was driving east on Highway 24 east of Ellicott Highway around 11:45 a.m. Sunday when his 2012 Hyundai Elantra hit a patch of ice and skidded into the westbound lane, hitting a Lexus SUV head-on.
Vargas was seriously injured, as were his wife, Alexis Vargas, 21, and a one-year-old girl. All three were properly buckled in, but each sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
The driver of the Lexus, Billy Masse, 59, of Canon City, was also wearing his seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.
State Patrol says excessive speed for the road conditions is considered a contributing factor in the crash. Vargas may face charges for the crash.
