Construction work will begin Monday on the first phase of a major safety improvement project on Hodgen Road in northeastern El Paso County. The project will add shoulders to the roadway, install turn lanes where needed, and smooth out steep hills to reduce snow drifting from State Highway 83 to the eastern leg of Black Forest Road.

Construction on the first phase is expected to take about five months. Phase two of the project will complete improvements on Hodgen Road from State Highway 83 to Farrar Drive and construction will begin after completion of the first phase. Depending on weather conditions and availability of resources, the entire project is scheduled for completion by December 2011.

Total cost of the project is estimated at $12 million. Funding is from the voter approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority one-cent sales tax.
