In a special meeting Thursday morning with the Fremont County Sheriff, Sheriff Jim Beicker and the Fremont Co. Commissioners a resolution was passed banning use, sale, and possession of fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county.
"We don't take this lightly," said Sheriff Beicker. "We know we're impacting business, but we don't know how we can ask law enforcement to chase these calls with a lack of firefighting resources. It just feels like the right thing to do".
The county, with support of the Canon City Area Fire Protection District, has also canceled this years 4th of July fireworks display from Skyline Drive.
Commissioners said they were told that it was too late to ban sales in the City of Canon City, but they are urging fireworks dealers to not set up shop.
Fremont County is in "Stage 1" fire restrictions, as are most Southern Colorado counties.
