Firefighters save family's pets

Smoke detectors are credited with helping to save a Colorado Springs family's pets after their house caught fire Tuesday afternoon. It happened around 12:30 pm at a home in the 500 block of Yellowstone Drive.
The fire department says the family wasn't at home when the fire started and that a neighbor heard their smoke alarms going off and called 911. Firefighters doused the flames within 10 minutes and also rescued a dog, two cats and an iguana.
Monique Gary and her mother live across the street and watched as firefighters brought the kittens out of the smoking house.
"I saw them try to revive or resuscitate a couple of the animals and I see that they're okay," Monique said.
Fire spokesperson Lt. Jeff Sievers says their priorities are to rescue people, then pets, then to limit the damage of a fire.
"You find that a lot of people, their lives are around their family and their pets," Sievers explains.
Investigators are looking into what caused the fire. Official damage estimates are pending.
Sievers says it's likely that the family will have to be displaced because of smoke damage.
