FREMONT COUNTY - Two dozen firefighters are working to build a defensible position for fighting a wildfire burning near Penrose. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), firefighters are building indirect containment lines around the Eightmile Fire, but aren't actively fighting it. The fire grew dramatically Friday morning, increasing in size from 1/2 acre to 60 acres. By Friday afternoon, the fire had grown to 100 acres in size.
In addition to the 24 firefighters on scene, 4 hot shot crews are on order, and several aircraft are involved in the fight.
When News 5 asked why the fire hadn't been aggressively attacked when it was only 1/2 acre, BLM spokesman Ralph Bellah pointed to the treacherous terrain that the fire is burning and said that it would have been too dangerous for the firefighters.
