COLORADO SPRINGS - Investigators with the Colorado Springs Fire Department say the five acre grass fire that started Thursday afternoon in the Red Rock Canyon Open Space was started by a model rocket. Fire crew found the model rocket while working to contain the flames, confirming an report taken by dispatchers.
The fire was reported at about 4:15 p.m. and was fully contained within two hours. No structures were threatened.
Model rocket launches are allowed in the city as burn bans and fire restrictions are currently not in place. During a burn ban, clubs and organizations wishing to launch model rockets to obtain a temporary-use permit from the Fire Marshal at the Fire Department Complex at 375 Printers Parkway.
