Fire in Las Animas grows to 5,000 acres

The Forest Service says the Bear Fire, burning in Las Animas, is now 5,000 acres in size.

The fire is burning through Horse Shoe Canyon, off Barela Mesa. Investigators say lightning sparked the fire in New Mexico, and it spread to Colorado. About 400 acres have burned in New Mexico, 4,600 in Colorado.

Crews experienced moderate to extreme fire behavior today. Because of the high winds, aerial resources were not able to fly.

The fire is burning with a half mile of four homes. No evacuations are in place, but residents in those homes are being contacted by officials, in case evacuations become necessary.
