Fire crews continue to make progress in Cañon City as they continue to battle the Royal Gorge Fire that started on Tuesday afternoon. The acreage of the desturction from the wildire stands at 3,218 as of Sunday morning. Fire crews were able to complete line construction on the south and west portions of the fire. The fire is 85 percent contained as of this evening.
Forty-eight of the 52 structures at the Royal Gorge were destroyed. The fire did cause some damage to the historical bridge. Some of the planks were damaged, but engineers say the bridge is structurally sound. No homes were lost.
Sunday, fire crews will continue with mop-up as needed in order to contain the fire to current control lines. Highway 50 is now and the evacuation center is now closed. More than 300 resources are at working to gain full control on the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
