A fire has started west of Canon City near Tunnel Drive. Smoke is visible from all over the Canon City area.
Fire fighters are on scene from the Canon City Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management. The fire is located off Temple Canyon Drive near an old landfill.
The BLM estimates the fire area at 5 acres.
Two BLM engines with four firefighters and responders from Fremont County and Cañon City are working the fire. A large airtanker dropped three loads of fire retardant early in the afternoon. The fire is burning in light fuels; grasses and piñon juniper with wind gusts of up to 30 miles an hour. No structures or other valuable resources are threatened. A total of 50 firefighters responded, including a 20-person hot shot crew from New Mexico.
By 4 p.m. the fire was estimated to be 50 percent contained with full containment expected by Friday night.
