Officials say a wildfire that started five weeks ago in Great Sand Dunes National Park is all but extinguished.

Park Superintendent Art Hutchinson said Monday a few hot spots are smoldering inside the 6,200-acre perimeter. He says they'll be allowed to burn out naturally.

Lightning started the fire on June 6, and it spread outside the park and into the San Isabel National Forest.

Hutchinson says firefighting costs will be at least $4.2 million. He says the fire helped in ways, by burning dead timber and showing how different agencies cooperate in fighting wildfires.
