The Emergency Operations Center in Colorado Springs has been packed with people and buzzing with activity over the past four days. From Incident commanders to volunteer call takers, more than a hundred people are practicing disaster scenarios.
Leading the drills are experts from FEMA's Emergency Management Institute. Communities have to apply for the program and Colorado Springs/El Paso County is one of only a few communities selected this year for the program.
Locals already have a lot of experience with fires and flashfloods. This program looks at that, but extends the drills to many other scenarios. Drills include other scenarios like: a contaminated water supply, disease outbreak, and the threat of an active shooter.
