Federal aid may help Fremont County tourism recovery after fire

Fremont County continues to recover after the Royal Gorge Fire. A foundation of the local economy is tourism and images of the fire had potential to diver tourists from the area. To counter the fire images a marketing budget was pieced together for a campaign showing all the things still happening in the region.

After other costs, tourism directors ended up with a small but important $22 thousand for time on television. Now there is a potential boost to the small campaign. Later this week city leaders learn if they get more than $100 thousand dollars in assistance from the Federal Economic Development Administration. "Now $140 thousand as apposed to $22 thousand-- you can really get the massage out there a lot stronger and a lot longer," Fremont County Tourism Council, Executive Director, Doug Shane.

Last year Fremont County tourism took a dip from the impact of the Waldo Canyon Fire. Through marketing the deficit was made up by the end of the season.
