An FDA Advisory Panel has concluded its meeting on mercury in dental fillings with the following recommendation: do more research.
Last year the Food and Drug Administration announced the fillings were safe, and did not pose a threat to human health. However, members of consumer and dental groups say the FDA used flawed data -- which led to the Advisory Panel meeting this month.
Panel members said amalgams are safe for most people, but there does appear to be a very sensitive population, so more studies are needed to learn the safest levels of mercury exposure.
