FDA eyes movie popcorn for labeling rules

The Food and Drug Administration is considering a rule change that would require movie theaters to disclose the calorie content of food sold at its concession stands. A 2009 study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest concluded that large orders of popcorn sold at the nations largest movie theater chains contained between 900 and 1200 calories without buttery topping.

Mike Jacobson, the Executive Director of CSPI supports rule change. "I think a lot of people are going to change what they eat when they are shocked at the calorie contents of so many of the foods that are served," Jacobson said.

According to NBC News, the National Association of Theater Owners has reportedly been lobbying the FDA to exclude theaters saying that their main business is entertainment and not food.

Under the proposed rules, prepared food sold grocery store and chain restaurants would also be required to list calorie content. A final decision on the rule change is expected to take place next week.
