Authorities are offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a Colorado inmate who made what officials say was an "elaborate escape" from a maximum security prison.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman says authorities are going door-to-door around the Sterling Correction Facility as they search for Douglas Alward.

They're considering expanding the search as the FBI joined in the manhunt.

Authorities haven't said how Alward made his escape. He has made three previous escapes, including one in 1991 in which he overpowered a courtroom guard with another prisoner. Alward was eventually caught, but not before kidnapping two people and opening fire on police.

He was serving a 20- to- 40-year sentence for attempted murder, assault, burglary and kidnapping and would have been eligible for parole in October.
