The FBI is closing the file on the deadly 2001anthrax mailings. A person familiar with the case says the agency has decided with finality that a government researcher acted alone.

The anthrax letters were sent to lawmakers and news organizations as the nation reeled in the aftermath of the September 11th terror attacks. The spores killed five people and sickened 17 others.

Dr. Bruce Ivins of the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., killed himself almost two years ago as authorities prepared to indict him. Investigators were on the verge of closing the case last year but government lawyers decided to conduct a further review of what evidence could be shared with the public.
