ATLANTA (AP) - The nation's largest farm lobbying group says if state lawmakers crack down on illegal immigrants, they should also help farmers who need seasonal labor.

Delegates to a convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation gave initial approval Tuesday to a policy offering to work with state governments to create programs supplying farmers with seasonal labor.

South Carolina Farm Bureau President David Winkles said if states are in the business of enforcing federal immigration law, then state authorities should also be able to give laborers a temporary worker status. Delegates also backed policies to secure the border and support state governments in enforcing immigration law.

A final vote on the new policies was expected later Tuesday.
