Family wants closure instead of death sentence for Mapps

The man accused of murdering the Tuttle family in Rye last November is heading to prison for the rest of his life after pleading guilty to the murders in a surprise move Thursday.

Even more surprising is that the family chose not to pursue the death penalty against Harry Mapps.

Winnie Owens was a dear friend of Kim Tuttle and her family. She understands why the family wanted closure instead of the death sentence.

"I think it's a blessing for the family," Owens says. "A true blessing that that they can have closure and know that justice was served. Can't bring them back, but justice was served.

Mapps will serve three consecutive life sentences. He'll have no chance of parole.

As for winnie and the community of Rye, Owens says they'll go on, unable to fill the void left by the Tuttle family.
