Fall rains bring havoc to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - The rain has tapered off in Haiti and floodwaters no longer claw at houses, but the situation across much of the country remains grim following an autumn of punishing rains. Scores of people have died and experts fear food shortages loom.
Heavy rains began falling even before Hurricane Sandy hit on Oct. 24 and dropped more than 20 inches of rain within a 24-hour period.
Another front soaked much of the north late last week, leaving at least a dozen dead. So far the back-to-back storms have killed up to 66 people.
The U.N. says 90 percent of Haiti's current harvest season may have been lost. The World Food Program estimates that more than 1.5 million people are now at risk of malnutrition.
