HAMDEN, Conn. - In its final game of the regular season, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 15-10 non-conference road decision to Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 8-5 overall on the season, while the Bobcats move to 6-8 on the year.
Senior captain Kyle Cassady (Upper Arlington, Ohio) led the Falcons with a career-high-tying six points (three goals, three assists), while fellow captain Erik Smith (Sr., Golden, Colo.) added a goal and two assists, both to his younger brother, Austin.
For the Bobcats, Matt Diehl finished with four goals and two assists, while goalkeeper Gill Conners recorded 18 saves to lead Quinnipiac's defense.
Quinnipiac took a 2-0 lead before Cassady put Air Force on the scoreboard with an assist from Christopher Allen (So., Hillsborough, N.J.) midway through the opening period. The Bobcats pushed their margin back to two with a goal just over a minute later, but after a face-off win, the Falcons responded with a score from Austin Smith (Fr., Golden, Colo.). However, Quinnipiac closed out the period with two more goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
The Bobcats' advantage grew to 6-2 three minutes into the second period, but Air Force went on a 4-0 run, tying the game at 6-6 with a score by Erik Smith with 4:15 left in the half. However, Quinnipiac closed out the second quarter with two more goals to take an 8-6 lead into the intermission.
After the break, the Bobcats continued to pull away, outscoring the Falcons 5-1 in the third period. Air Force's only goal of the quarter came at the 11:47 mark with a score from senior captain Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) to bring the score to 9-7, but Quinnipiac closed out the period with four straight scores to grab their largest lead of the contest.
Air Force came back battling in the final stanza, getting scores from Cassady and Crampton just 30 seconds apart, while Allen added his lone goal of the game with 8:17 to play. The margin remained at three goals for most of the remainder of the fourth quarter before the Bobcats tacked on two goals in the final 64 seconds to account for the final score.
Next up for the Falcons is the ECAC Tournament, which will be held May 1 and 3 in Columbus, Ohio. The Falcons, who captured a share of the ECAC regular season championship, still await their seeding and opponent for Thursday's semifinal.
