It's hard to imagine anyone could pull out their own stomach. Last month, Jesus Gutierrez was stabbed in Pueblo and told police he yanked his stomach out of his body. Experts now say that's more than likely what happened.
Gutierrez was stabbed outside Paisano's bar on Lake Ave. on July 10. Sgt. Eric Bravo says the victim told Pueblo police he yanked on his stomach thinking it was a knife and it came out. Gutierrez collapsed a couple of blocks away. Police found his stomach on road and rushed it to the hospital, but surgeons said it could not be re-attached.
A forensic pathologist in Arapahoe County studied the stomach and told police it appears the victim was stabbed once. Sgt. Bravo says the stomach was completely severed from the bottom and cut about 3/4 of the way at the top. "It wouldn't have fallen out, without him pulling him on it," said Sgt. Bravo who read the pathologist's report.
The suspect in the case, Sheeren Nieves is facing a charge of attempted murder.
Doctors at Parkview Medical Center told News First 5 Gutierrez can survive without his stomach.
