Estes Park preps for flooding

ESTES PARK (AP) - A spokeswoman for the town of Estes Park says sandbags are being placed around the post office in the downtown area as the Big Thompson and Fall rivers get close to overflowing their banks.

Kate Rusch says Saturday that the sandbags are being placed as a precaution to protect downtown homes and businesses. She says the rivers are running higher than normal because recent warm weather has led to a strong spring runoff.

Rusch says the water isn't an extreme threat, but does have the potential to impact the entire downtown area.

In addition, sand and around 1,000 bags have been made available to residents and business owners who want to make their own levees.
