Environmental groups oppose alabaster mining

CARBONDALE, Colo. (AP) - A Carbondale environmental group and a Denver law firm are appealing a decision by the U.S. Forest Service to permit alabaster mining in Avalanche Creek south of Carbondale.

The appeal filed Monday challenges Forest Service approvals issued in May that were based on an 1872 mining law.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent says opponents claim the law now bars mining minerals used for artwork, which is a major mine attraction.
