Energy bill scam targets Pueblo businesses

The Pueblo Police Department has been receiving calls about a phone scam involving your energy bill.

An unidentified person calls and informs you that they are with the electric company.

They proceed to tell you that they are going to shut off your power unless you send a specified amount of money to them and that it cannot be a credit card or check payment. They then try to get you to go to King Soopers or Walgreens to send money immediately to avoid losing power.

So far, two local businesses have been targeted.

Citizens are reminded to not provide information to anyone who calls. Most major companies will be able to provide to you, your information without having to ask for it.

Black Hills Energy has informed detectives that before they shut off service to any customer, they will send out two notices by mail and then make one by phone. They will not turn down credit cards or checks.
