On Friday evening, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a report of a shots fired in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Store located on E. Platte Avenue. While Colorado Springs police officers were in route, it was learned that some El Paso County Sheriffs Deputies assigned to the Crime Reduction Unit were present during the shooting.
Upon arrival there, Springs officers learned that 4 El Paso Sheriff's CRU members, dressed in plain clothes and driving two separate unmarked vehicles, were engaging in some follow-up investigation in the parking lot. They spotted a vehicle they believed to be stolen that was occupied by a male driver, and a female passenger. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, and simultaneously approached it on foot. At some point during this interaction, a single shot was fired by one of the deputies into the vehicle. No one was struck by the bullet.
Both the male and the female were detained, and the investigation is continuing. It was later confirmed that the vehicle involved was in fact stolen. Neither the occupants of the vehicle or the involved Deputies were injured.
The identities of the detained adults are being withheld at this time. In accordance with El Paso County Sheriffs Office policy, the names of the involved Deputies will also be withheld. The deputy that fired the shot has been placed on routine administrative leave, which is common practice when deputies are involved in deadly force situations.
The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's Office in conjunction with the CSPD Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit.
