Eightmile fire now 25 percent contained

FREMONT COUNTY- As of 11:07 p.m. last night, the Eightmile fire is 25 percent contained. Right now, there are 288 personnel working on scene. The fire is burning 524 acres, near Phantom Canyon Road between Penrose and Canon City.

Containment is up from 10 percent yesterday afternoon. The fire was started by a lightning strike on June 23. No structures are immediately threatened, however 16 residences about a mile from the fire in the Red Rocks subdivision remain on pre-evacuation notification status, meaning they should be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice if fire behavior should suddenly change.

The fire is named for nearby Eightmile Creek.
