Colorado lawmakers are rushing to pass a bill they hope will give the state an edge in competing for millions of dollars in federal education funds.

The state Senate gave initial approval to the bill on Wednesday. It's expected to win final approval on Thursday before heading to the House for consideration.

The bill would require the state to track where educators got their training and report on the success of teachers and principals in boosting student achievement. Legislative leaders want to pass the bill before the state applies for competitive federal education funds next week.
