Driver killed in head-on crash with semi

CHEYENNE COUNTY - A 28-year old man died in a head-on collision with a semi-truck in Cheyenne County. The accident happened at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning along Colorado Highway 40 near milepost 438.

State troopers say the crash victim was headed west a 2000 Dodge Durango when he drifted into the eastbound lanes and hit an oncoming Peterbilt tractor trailer.

The semi's driver, 42-year old Shane Yarr of Yuma, Colorado attempted to avoid the crash by braking and steering to the right. However, the maneuver proved unsuccessful.

The Dodge's driver was wearing pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of family. Yarr was taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and troopers don't believe speed, drugs or alcohol contributed the accident.
