Driver in deadly auto-pedestrian accident had clean record

COLORADO SPRINGS - Flowers, balloons and candles mark the area along Pikes Peak Avenue where two young people lost their lives in a car accident Monday afternoon.

Neto White, 9, and Leondro Carabajal, 17, were trying to push a stalled minivan out of traffic along with Neto's 10-year-old sister when the three of them were hit from behind by an SUV.

The driver of that vehicle, 47-year-old Robert Icenogle, is in jail facing two counts of Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Assault and Driving Under the Influence of Drugs.

According to his arrest affidavit, Icenogle admitted to officers that he had the taken allergy medicine Phenergan and the pain killer Methadone before getting behind the wheel.

During his video advisement from the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center Tuesday afternoon, the district attorney asked that Icenogle's bail be increased.

He told the judge, "I am disabled and on a very limited income of only around $2,000 a month and high bail would put an extreme hardship on me."

Nonetheless, the judge increased the bail to $50,000 for each of three the felony charges.

News 5 searched Icenogle's background and found other than some bad debts, he basically has a clean record. In fact, his last traffic ticket was in 1990. A bond reduction hearing is schedule for next Thursday.

Neto and his sister were both students at Wildflower Elementary in Harrison School District Two. District spokesperson Christine Lyle says the school had grief counselors on hand Tuesday and will continue to do so throughout the week as needed.

The White Family Memorial fund has been established at the Harrison District 2 Federal Credit Union to help the family pay for medical expenses. Donations can be made in person or mailed to 1060 Harrison Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80905.
