Driver dies after truck hits bison in Colorado

A Kansas man has died after the semitrailer he was driving ran into a bison on the plains east of Denver.

The Colorado State Patrol has identified the man as Maynard Bontrager, 74, of South Hutchinson, Kansas.

State Trooper Nate Reid says Bontrager was driving west on Colorado 36 near Byers early Tuesday when his truck hit a bison that was in the middle of the road. The truck went off the right side of the road and rolled. Reid says Bontrager died at the scene of the accident.

The bison was killed. Reid says there is a ranch on both sides of the highway. It's unclear how the bison got onto the road.
