COLORADO SPRINGS - Two people have died after they were hit from behind while trying to push a stalled minivan out of the road. The accident happened at around 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of Pikes Peak Avenue in near the intersection of Parkside Drive.
The police have arrested the driver of the second vehicle, 47-year-old Robert Icenogle, on charges of Driving Under the Influence and Vehicular Homicide.
Witness David Dew was across the street at a car wash when the accident happened.
"I heard the screaching of the brakes, the car accident, I looked up and called the police right away," Dew said.
He saw one man pinned beneath Icenogle's Dodge Durango. Another man and a child were also visibly injured. Dew ran to check for signs of life when a nurse from Peak Vista arrived and began CPR on one of the victims.
Dew said he thought the man beneath the SUV was the child's father.
"I kind of know it was the mother because she was yelling, cursing, screaming, crying over the child that was rushed to the hospital and over the person that was under the vehicle."
A father himself, Dew said experiencing the aftermath of the accident will haunt him.
"Probably won't be able to get it out of my head for a while."
There were two other people in the minivan at the time of the accident. The police say they were taken to the hospital along with a third person who was helping to push. All had what are described as moderate injuries. None of the victim's names have been released.
