A little girl was attacked by a dog in Colorado Springs. She has been rushed to Memorial Hospital for treatment of very serious facial injuries. Her exact age is unknown, but police say she is younger than 10 years old.
Neighbors tell News First 5 the girl may have to go to Denver for treatment.
The attack happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Dogwood Drive on the southeast side of the city, near Chelton. Police dispatchers called the dog a pit bull. The dog does not belong to the child's family. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region says the owner of the dog gave up ownership of the dog to the organization. The Humane Society will euthanize the dog and test for rabies.
The dog was unlicensed, unleashed, and not neutered. Police say children were playing on the sidewalk and street with the dog when it started to bite the young girl.
Police will charge the owner with unlawful ownership of a dangerous animal, a misdemeanor.
