Doctors need to get a thorough medical history for patients with suspected food allergies, according to the first-ever food allergy guidelines released by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The guidelines target doctors -- and include the definition of food allergies, identify foods that commonly cause reactions, list symptoms, and recommend when allergy tests should be conducted.
The new standards also stress the importance of compiling a comprehensive medical history because it's the best way to diagnose a new food allergy.
