Doctor pleads guilty to distributing painkillers

DENVER (AP) - Federal prosecutors have taken action against two Colorado doctors accused of illegally prescribing painkillers.

Kevin Clemmer pleaded guilty Thursday to distributing Oxycodone for nonmedical purposes and money laundering. Sentencing is set for Sept. 19. The Denver Post reports (http://bit.ly/16R3l9R ) three of his associates previously were sentenced in the case.

Also Thursday, Dr. Joseph Ferrara and four alleged co-conspirators made initial appearances in federal court in Denver over an indictment alleging they worked together to illegally distribute prescription drugs. A fifth co-defendant was arranging her surrender. Online court records didn't indicate whether they had lawyers who could comment on the allegations.

Ferrara had a medical practice in Wheat Ridge and Dillon. He faces charges relating to money laundering, bankruptcy fraud and drugs.

Prosecutors say both cases involved overdose deaths.
