When someone comes into the emergency room with an injury the chance they'll get a CT scan or MRI is more likely now than ever before.

A nationwide study finds emergency doctors ordered medical imaging for about 6-percent of injured patients in 1998. In 2007, that percentage rose to 15-percent.

Researchers say advances in technology have allowed doctors to diagnose significant injuries more accurately.

This study included data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Between 1998 and 2007, a total of 324,569 emergency department visits were sampled.

The study was led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
