A structured meal program combined with exercise may be the key to driving down the obesity epidemic.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh had 130 obese adults follow a strict diet made up of liquid and pre-packaged meals - half the participants also exercised at the start of the study while the other half waited six months.

They found those who worked out immediately lost more weight at the beginning, but the second group caught up once they started their exercise routine.

On average, the participants lost over 25 pounds.

The study was led by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
