Businesses want shoppers to realize the importance of buying local.
We found out more than a couple of Pueblo stores that participated in Small Business Saturday.
Take a drive through Pueblo and you can easily see the streets are lined with local stores.
You can always spot a chance to shop small, but it's not easy to be a small business owner.
"The last three years it's gotten so tough," said Roxann James, owner of Animal Kingdom. "It's hard because there's times I don't get a paycheck."
When you shop small, you can always find that perfect gift for the holiday season.
What's cuter than a puppy wrapped up in a bow for Christmas?
You can find one at Animal Kingdom, a small business downtown.
Local stores offered several discounts for Small Business Saturday to try and compete with big stores.
"Whoever walks in the door, whatever they want, we're going to give them discounts, 20% off," said James. "We'll make them deals, layaway."
"Puzzles are really big, really in, so we have a 20% off on those," said Jeanette Peasley, owner and manager of Union Toy Stop. "One of our little plush lines, monkeys, we're going to be doing 10% off on those little lines."
Just keep in mind...
"A lot of businesses have really neat, unique things to offer," said Peasley. "I would say 90% of the items in the small business stores are different than what you find in your mass market stores."
"Please come out and shop local," said James. "We are the heart of Pueblo, and we depend and appreciate every dollar spent in our stores."
It's helpful, no matter what you buy.
The hope from this is that you'll visit small businesses year-round, and if you're looking for something special for the holidays, stop by and ask about their deals through Christmas.
