The Christmas day shooting in Pueblo that left one man dead was in response to a domestic violence call.
40-year-old Richard Licon forced his way into a home at 919 W. Evans Ave where he pointed a gun at individuals inside the home and assaulted another.
Upon the arrival of the first officer on scene, Licon pointed a gun at the officer before going back inside. Licon then ran out the back of the property and a second officer assisted in a foot pursuit to the 100 block of Arthur.
Officers found Licon at an apartment building on 108 Arthur where he raised a gun at one of the officers. It was there that he was shot by officers and later died from his wounds at Parkview Hospital.
The officers involved were Corporal Matt Ballard, 14 year veteran who has worked in patrol and has also spent time in the Investigations Bureau. In addition he was a member of the S.W.A.T. team for 8 years and served 3 Special Ops combat tours, one in Afghanistan and 2 in Iraq.
The second officer involved was Officer Ben Candelaria. Officer Candelaria has served as a patrol officer for the twelve and a half years he has been with the department.
Both officers are on administrative leave per standard procedure. The Critical Incident Team continues with their investigation.
