The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says it appears an 8-year-old girl found dead yesterday at a mobile home park, was shot. "It appears that she had a gunshot wound, but until tomorrow when the autopsy is complete we still have an undetermined cause of death," said Laurie Kilpatrick, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. Desirea French was a second grader at Avondale Elementary School.
Investigators say the girl's grandfather found her and her father 32-year old John French Jr. inside their home at the Meadowbrook Mobile Home park east of Pueblo. John French Jr. suffered a gunshot wound to his head and is recovering at Parkview hospital, according to deputies.
News First 5 asked Lt. Todd Perry if detectives were searching for a suspect. "The evidence is pointing us in a direction that we probably do not have a murderer running amongst us. We have an individual of interest and we're focusing our investigation to attempt to develop those leads," said Lt. Perry.
The sheriff's office says there were no signs of forced entry into the home.
John French Jr.'s condition was not known as of 4:30 p.m. Monday. "He is not a patient currently listed in the patient directory," said Michelle Peulen, Public Relations Specialist at Parkview Medical Center.
