Dems: Colorado voter registration initiative is maneuvering in battleground state

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler is announcing a voter registration initiative.

The Republican elections chief did not give details of the initiative. His office says the information will be released Tuesday afternoon.

Gessler has been criticized recently for his plan to check the citizenship of registered voters by sending letters to people who once presented proof of non-citizenship, such as a green card, when they applied for a driver's license. The search has yet to yield evidence of a case where an illegally registered voter cast a ballot.

Gessler's office announced last week that 16 people out of 3,903 who received letters voluntarily withdrew their registration. Another 482 verified that they were U.S. citizens and others did not respond.

Democrats question Gessler's political motives in a battleground state.
