DENVER (AP) - Colorado Democrats say the Republican secretary of state's office can't give an impartial decision in a recall effort against a Democratic lawmaker.
A lawyer for Democratic Sen. Angela Giron of Pueblo argued Wednesday that the office of Secretary of State Scott Gessler should recuse itself from her recall challenge. Giron's lawyer says that Gessler met with the organizers of the Giron recall effort.
A deputy secretary of state is deciding Giron's challenge to the petition language. She told Giron's lawyer that she's never had a conversation with Gessler about the recall, but that a formal decision would come later Wednesday.
Giron and Democratic Senate President John Morse are both challenging recall petitions certified by Gessler's office. The lawmakers are being targeted because they both supported gun control measures
