Larimer County commissioners have put the final touches on a series of deals that will allow public access to fishing on a prime 800-foot section of the Big Thompson River near Drake.
After the deadly Big Thompson Canyon flood of 1976, the county acquired 153 parcels along the river. Property owners in the area wanted to buy parcels adjacent to their land, as allowed by a county policy adopted in 2005, but anglers worried they could lose river access.
The county reached deals to sell 15 parcels to private property owners around the Hayden subdivision area, but it kept ownership of land along both shores of the river. It also has traded two parcels with landowners to ensure access all the way across the river.
