Researchers in Ireland have found that a common spice in curry powder is effective in counteracting cancer. Tests at a lab at University College in Cork, Ireland, showed that molecules in the spice turmeric have killed esophageal cancer cells.
Turmeric is that bright yellow spice that adds color and flavor to exotic dishes. New research on turmeric and a chemical component of it called curcumin showed that curcumin destroyed esophageal cancer cells within 24 hours.
One researcher says "well we do know there are certain countries that have lower incidence of certain types of guy cancers. Of course thought a number of studies particularity in the 80s, they were looking to see if there was any reason for this. And a lot has come from the epidemiological data suggesting that certain areas has different incidence of cancer."
Curcumin is already being tested for treatment for arthritis and dementia.
