A 22-year-old University of Colorado student from Chappaqua, N.Y., has died after an accident at Wolf Creek Ski Area in southwest Colorado.

Mineral County Coroner Charles Downing says another skier saw skis sticking out of the snow Wednesday and found Alex Singer buried head first in a tree well, the column of shallow snow that forms at the base of a tree.

Downing ruled the cause of death as suffocation and hypothermia. Singer was in-bounds, on an ungroomed trail.

Downing says Singer likely fell Tuesday afternoon, after buying a half-day pass for the resort. Singer, a senior studying ecology and evolutionary biology, was an avid skier.

A storm left more than four feet of new snow at the resort this week.
