CSPD numbers show crime rates are up

As Colorado Springs Police investigate Sunday's fatal shooting the fear for many is crime rates will go up as city street lights go down. Add that to massive police budget cuts, and it seems that just may be the case. "Unfortunately we've found ourselves in a position where we responding to crime and have less time to be proactive." explains Sgt. Steve Noblitt with CSPD, "Those crime prevention programs we had are now gone."
The un-official numbers from CSPD are staggering. Since last year this time, Colorado Springs has seen a rise in vehicle break-ins of about 24%. Strong arm assaults are up 46%. Businesses aren't safe either. "Business robberies are up by about 41% this year." says Noblitt. Perhaps the most staggering come in the form of home invasions. "Residential robberies, more like your home invasions, are up over 100%." explains Noblitt, "So we are very concerned about the home invasion style robberies."
And while Police say it isn't time to panic, you should be on the look out. "I think people should be concerned." says Noblitt, "Being concerned is always something that will help make yourself less of a victim."
