The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol are encouraging motorcycle riders to get professional training before they hit the road.
CDOT and CSP point to certain statistics that show lack of training among motorcycle riders causes many motorcycle fatalities.
1. Motorcycle riders accounted for 18% of traffic deaths in Colorado for 2010.
2. More than one-third of motorcycle drivers killed in crashes did not have the legally-required motorcycle endorsement of their driver's license.
3. Law enforcement investigations determined motorcycle drivers were "at fault" in 71% of fatal crashes.
